Wedding Hymns

Hymns for weddings – a brief introduction to the challenge of selecting hymns

A lot depends on your guests. If quite a few are church going (or were) then traditional strong hymns can work well. If quite a few still attend church, then some of the modern ones may be good. If very few attend Church, the tune becomes more important. There are some hymns which use well known secular tunes which can be very helpful for people who do not attend a Church.

From the new Church hymnbook [CH4] there are a number of new ones which are worth considering :

600 'Spirit of God' which is sung to the tune Skye Boat song

336 'Christ is our light' which is sung to Highland Cathedral. This has words which are particularly appropriate for a wedding.

697 ‘Let’s praise the creator’ is also sung to a well-known Scottish tune and the words are excellent for a wedding.

Other hymns using better known traditional hymn tunes, but with more modern words include : 594 Come Holy Spirit Come, 608 Spirit of truth and grace, 622 We sing a love, 696 We come dear Lord to celebrate and 700 As man and woman were made

A recent favourite to sing is No. 189 "Be still for the presence of the Lord" which is beautiful. This is very popular within the churches and has been around for 25 years or so.

Old favourites include Love Divine, Praise my soul the King of heaven, The King of Love. A very apt modern song is "Jesus stand among us at the meeting of our loves"[Mission Praise 381] but this needs folks who know it, or it falls flat.

Many couples go back to their childhood to select songs which they remember from school or Sunday School. hence choices like "All over the world the spirit is moving" "Give me oil in my lamp - Sing Hosanna", "Bind us together", "One more step along the world I go", "All things bright and beautiful"

CH4 Church of Scotland new hymn book

As well as traditional and modern choices shown in the lists below, there are a couple of new hymns which work well, because they have good words and use familiar tunes:

336 Christ is our light! [Tune Highland Cathedral]

594 Come Holy Spirit come [Tune Crown him with many crowns]

600 Spirit of God unseen as the wind [Tune : Skye boat song]

608 Spirit of truth and grace [Tune : Come down O love Divine]

622 We sing a love [Tune : Woodlands (Tell out my soul)]

696 We come dear lord to celebrate [Tune : Dear Lord and Father of mankind]

697 Let’s praise the Creator who gave us each other [Tune : The road and miles to Dundee]

700 As man and woman we were made [Tune : Sussex carol]
