My name is Donald Thomas, I retired in 2007 after 42 years service in local government in the west of Scotland.  I held various senior financial management posts during that period of service with various local authorities.  I am happy to see the experience gained in my working life being used to the benefit of my local church.

I have been a member of Merrylea since 1976, playing an active part in the life of the Church as Treasurer for almost 20 years and as a leader in the Focus youth group for 13 years.

I have worked with 3 ministers and 5 session clerks during my time at Merrylea. February 2009 will be my 40th anniversary as an Elder of the Kirk.  I have been a member of 3 Kirk Sessions but most of the 40 years service has been spent at Merrylea.

My aim is to ensure Merrylea continues to be a source of Christian witness in the local community.

I have been married to Heather for almost 37 years. She has also played an active part in Merrylea's life serving for many years in the Sunday School, and as Fabric Convenor for 8 years until 2006.

We both enjoy walking and in recent years have completed the West Highland Way, the Great Glen Walk and the Fife Coastal Path, a combined distance of almost 300 miles.

We both also enjoy gardening and spent many enjoyable hours in our 2 allotments just across the road from the Church.

Over many years world travel has also featured very much in both our lives.  Visits to Petra in Jordan, the Pyramids at Giza near Cairo, and the Valley of the Kings at Luxor, Egypt were on our itinerary in January 2008.  Plans are at an early stage for visits to Australia and New Zealand in late 2008 / early 2009.

I enjoy mountain biking which I took up after a break of 35 years from road cycling.  Last year I completed a week long off road cycle run from Aberdeen to Ardnamurchan, a distance of 270 miles involving some 19,500ft of hill climbs.  In June 2008 I plan to cycle 230 miles from Barra to the Butt of Lewis in the Western Isles.  This is one area of Scotland that I have not visited before so I am looking forward to this trip very much.

Wishing you God's Blessing,

Donald Thomas
